I'm beginning to think that it is possible for a person's head to explode. For three years, I worked in an office who's motto was, "Build for the lowest common denominator". We did. But in the process of trying to keep up with the daily site updates, there wasn't a whole lot of time to expand one's knowledge about the "bleeding edge" that was pooling around me.Pardon me, I have to stick my nose back in a book/website.

House is painted and other things

It seems as though the house is done . . .being painted that is. I never thought I could be made so happy by such a simple thing.It is done just in time for winter to come along and I think we got all the holes plugged, so it should be a warm and toasty Oregon winter.Part of painting the house was taking down the old, rotten deck. We've reclaimed a lot of yard and we are planning what we want to do with it next spring. Look back through the archives, around April 2003 and you'll find a list of plants and flowers I want to put in my yard.No pressure.Really.

Breaking Current News

In the light of the condition of my house, I suppose "breaking" news could be seen as an unfortunate headline, so let's change that.It's getting closer to that August 2 self-imposed deadline for this site. And I'm working feverishly to get more info about the house repairs up for you, my faithful audience, to giggle at.This past weekend we decided that we should start up three more projects all at once. Don't you know that's how th
ings get done?Project #1: This is the big one. From the beginning we have known that there is lap board siding underneath the green board and bat siding. I've been against even the suggestion of "peeking" just to see what shape the siding underneath was in. I finally broke down and compromised that the porch is covered and not as exposed to the elements and it would be a perfect place to examine what we believe to be the original siding. See picture above to get an idea of what we are looking at repairing/replacing.Project #2: The trim. We are still painting the trim. There is so much trim to paint. And we are starting to run out of stuff that doesn't require a ladder. See the wish list for help in this area.Project #3: We bought the house with a fence on three sides, leaving the driveway unfenced. However, on the recent trip back from Kansas we picked
up two hitchhikers who required that the fence project be bu!

to high priority. The hitchhikers were two little puppies, just to stop any urgent, angry phone calls. We sunk the posts to complete the fenced yard and will be doing the gate in the next couple of days.

The painted entryway

The color of the foyer is 'new burgandy'. It's pretty, with a flat finish that nicely compliments the living room's 'thyme'. It took three coats to acheive that flawless look. However, the room won't be finished until there is some moulding around the closet door and along the floor. The desk is courtesy of the school down the street.

Currently in a holding pattern on the bathroom. Our contractor had a heart attack and the cash flow this month is low after my visit to Kansas. I'm fairly certain that heart attack and cash flow problem are not related.I'll let you know when it gets started again.

First major project

This is the first major project for the house.When we first moved in, the bathroom looked like this, not only was it scary but the tub wasn't working. It wasn't a functional bathroom. It nominated itself as the first major project without objections.I think the hardest part of remodeling the bathroom hasn't been the demolition of the original plaster and lathe, but rather getting rid of the debris once we tore it down. We carted off 842 lbs. of plaster to the dump. It was reasonably priced at $42 for the whole load, but that was just the plaster.Luckily there is a wood recyling center not far from the house
and they take wood with nails in it. $15 a load. Thank goodness!The tub is still in the bathroom. It's cast iron and I haven't been eating my spinach lately.

It's Flag Day!Which actually holds no significance for this page, other than it was started in April and nothing has been added like I had planned.This is the image the home appraiser took of the house from our rental house driveway. The truck did not come with the house. Yes, it is actually army fatigue green. No, I don't know where you can get a paint sample so that you too may have your house this color. Anyone else hear the Psycho shower scene music playing. I kid because I love.The six month anniversary of buying the house will happen August 2, 2002. I plan to have everything up by that time.For those who absolutely can't wait until then to know what is going on, I've just finished gutting
the main floor bathroom and it's currently, studs and a toilet.With that, I leave you to comment and chuckle.
